Join us for a Catskills-centric art class that offers the chance to pound out your stress and create your own art work from the results!

New Paltz, NY-based fine artist and organic watercolor paint maker, Laura Leigh, leads our workshop outdoors, bringing with her a colorful collection of sedimentary rock and clay from the Catskills, Appalachian, and Green Mountains. In the first half of the class, Laura will share her knowledge about basic geology, the history of pigments, and how to safely pound, mix, and mold rock dust and other pigments into a unique, artistic medium that is both historic and modern. Students then are invited to channel their energy into pulverizing the rocks into a fine powder, and learning the process of making organic watercolor paint.

The second half of the class will allow you to pick a spot, a thought, a photo, a plant, or an idea, and get to work on creating your own watercolor painting. All supplies will be provided. No prior experience in art or painting is required. We encourage all types of people to get in touch with their creative side, and enjoy the act of pounding rock, mixing the paint, and putting brush to paper!

Coffee, Mimosas, healthy snacks, and Crimson merchandise will be on offer by suggested donation.

We will be outdoors in a fenced, flat yard for our program; please wear comfortable shoes. The area is wheelchair accessible. However, the indoor bathroom is two steps up.

Park cars or bikes on Liberty, Broadway, and in the surrounding area. We are in walking distance to many great restaurants and attractions in the Midtown Arts and the Stockade Districts in Kingston, NY.

Laura Leigh is a fine artist and maker of organic watercolor paints based in New Paltz, NY. She received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from SUNY New Paltz in 2014, and completed several artist's residency programs, many in national parks. Laura has created her own earth pigment library made from Ochre minerals and clay from around the country, and now spends most of her time teaching online and in person classes. She believes that painting is therapeutic and wants to help heal and connect people through creative expression.
